The First Step to Being a Crazy Lady

Last week I decided I was going to make my own refried beans.  Ambitious, I know.

They are about $1.50 a can, and I know that in the grand scheme of things an extra 75 cents for beans isn't really that big of a deal, but I felt like it was a little outrageous.  I found a recipe online that looked pretty easy and bought some dry pinto beans the next time I was at the store, for a dollar a pound.

Andrew came home that day to a crock pot full of boiling beans.  He looked concerned and asked me what I was doing.  I told him my plan to make my own refried beans and he decided I was crazy.  "What's next?" he asked. "Are you going to start making your own laundry detergent?"

The thought of making my own detergent had actually crossed my mind.  My mom does it.  And I had been planning on it once we get a bigger place with more room.   So I told him I probably would.

But according to Andrew this is the first step to being a crazy lady. He said if I'm crazy enough to make refried beans and laundry detergent I will probably start making my own deodorant.  Which I would do. . . if it was cheap and worked well, of course.

Anyway my beans were delicious and I am planning on making them again.

Also here's the recipe if you were curious .

  1. Those all sound like perfectly fine things to do. I have thought about doing both of those things myself. For the beans, it was partly about cost and partly about the fact that most canned refried beans have lard in them and that makes me not want to eat them most of the time. Butter sounds much better.

  2. I agree with Mindy. The homemade laundry detergent works great and saves a bunch of money. If we had a bigger place I would definitely make it. Also, I balled up piece of aluminum foil in the dryer works instead of dryer sheets.
Just tell Andrew you're saving money so he can buy all the new electronic toys he wants.
